Here in Philadelphia, it’s been raining with little reprieve for what feels like two weeks straight. Although this meant I couldn’t get outside to gather some flowers or other natural elements I might have wanted for a Beltane offering, it was nice to see the sun break out on the morning of May first. April showers bring May flowers indeed. All that time filled me with an urge to get out into nature--which I plan to fulfill with the rest of this month--and reminded me of a reason I love tarot cards.

Just like we can choose clothing or home decor to set a tone for the event we are headed to or the type of life we intend to live, the artwork of a tarot deck can change the whole tone for the story of your life you are about to lay out in the cards. And the act of choosing a tarot deck is an opportunity to manifest the life you desire. For this Beltane Tarot Spread I chose to work with Monica L Knighton’s “The Stolen Child Tarot.” Inspired by the William Butler Yeats poem of the same name, the deck is filled with changelings, or children, living in natural settings amongst a variety of animals and felt perfect for the midpoint of spring.

Raine Shakti shared that the inspiration for the Self Love theme of this blog hop was Miley Cyrus’s song “Flowers.” I like the idea of self love as an act of romancing yourself in the way you wish a lover would--rather than taking yourself to the spa or salon to be pampered in a way only someone who is paid to pamper you would. Although my own practice of self love has never involved a spa or salon, neither has it taken on a tone of romance Miley describes. So I decided to create a tarot spread based on the tips she drops in her lyrics. Remember, if you don’t have any tarot cards on hand, you can also use these questions as journal prompts. Or, read through my sample spread to see if any of the answers I received may work for you, too.

“I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can”

from “Flowers” performed by Miley Cyrus

Depending upon the cards you pull, this tarot spread can help you to create your own self love ritual or it may give you ideas that you can begin to incorporate into your life every day moving forward.

HOW CAN I SUMMON MY OWN ATTENTION TO MYSELF? This question was inspired by Miley’s writing her own name in the sand. This Empress card inspires me to find something cozy to wrap myself in and to pamper myself with a smell that I love in order to coax out a softer side of myself. When I lived in Brooklyn I walked by at least one bodega a day and would ALWAYS stop to take in the smell of the flowers.

WHAT OFFERING CAN I MAKE TO HONOR MYSELF? This question was inspired by Miley’s buying herself flowers. Although not the question inspired by Miley’s writing her own name, this Six of Pentacles card does make me think of writing my name and hanging it from a tree. Or perhaps some affirmations to the less appreciated parts of myself that could use more attention. I’ve always loved the idea that the prayers of Tibetan flags are carried on the wind.

WHAT ACTIVITY WOULD I ENJOY DOING ALONE WITH MYSELF? This question was inspired by Miley’s dancing with herself and taking her own hand. This Judgement card reminds me of a favorite quote by Anaïs Nin: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” Perhaps I could improvise a dance or song or painting or journal entry about what would emerge if I could shed the old petals or cocoon I keep myself wrapped in.

WHAT TALK WOULD I REALLY LIKE TO HAVE WITH MYSELF? This question was inspired by Miley’s talking to herself for hours and this Five of Swords speaks to me of how we all mask ourselves for various settings and people. This tells me I need to hash it out with myself about the masks that may have served me once but are no longer working. It would be great if we could all be 100 percent authentic all the time, but a new appropriate mask might actually help with that.
